The Lions played their first Thanksgiving game back in 1934. The Lions were competing with the Tigers, and owner G.A. Richards wanted to do something to draw a larger crowd. So, he held the game on Thanksgiving to avoid competing with the Tigers, and he also convinced NBC to broadcast the game nationwide. The largest crowd during the previous season had been 15,000, and this first Thanksgiving Day game drew 26,000.

The Cowboys were added in 1966 because Pete Rozelle was looking for a second team, and his good friend Tex Schramm volunteered the Cowboys.

I can't find my book about the Cowboys, but Tex Schramm, the General Manager, wanted more exposure for the Cowboys and agreed to play on Thanksgiving Day.
I can't remember the year the first Thanksgiving Day game
was played, but it goes way back. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
