Not as many as John Smith or Margaret Smith - there are about 15 000 of each in the UK alone.

A lot. My last name used to be Smith and I hated it because of how common it was! Whenever somebody would ask what my last name was and I would say "What's the most common name you can think of?" and they would ALWAYS say "Smith." Nobody would ever be able to guess my last name now. It's kind of nice though, except nobody ever spells or pronounces it right. Oh well...

If you google the name you get 13 million hits, so if that is any indication there are probably a lot of them.
