I base my decisions on the fabric. Cotton should be washed in cold, maybe warm. Cotton will shrink. I also hang dry my cotton clothes to avoid shrinkage. However, with bath towels and sheets I just go ahead and use warm and also dry them on a medium setting.
I wash most of my clothes on cold, because I am using a laundrymat and the temperature runs hotter than if I had one at home!
Also, look at the labels on the clothes to see what is recommended. Most of the time the labels are accurate.
Good luck!

Your bf is wrong. Your clothes will not be cleaned very well in cold water. You should wash white on 90. Dark at 60 and colored at 40. And if you want to save on energy, you can wash dark and white at 60 and colored on 40, if you like.

I believe that white clothes should be washed in hot water, because you usually use bleach, and hot water will and does a better job than cold water. other wash can be done in a cooler temperature. I was taught that a long time ago.

at lot depends on the type of fabric. White cotton and linen can be washed on a very hot wash but white synthetics such as polyester and nylon will discolor on a hot wash. Most Fabric these days are designed to be washed at 40 degrees centigrade if in doubt check the care instructions on the garment label

White - Hot water
Colors - warm/cold
Darks - cold
Most clothes can be washed in warm water with no or little problem. New colored clothes, especially Red ones should be washed seperately a few loads in warm water to avoid bleeding into whites.

I don't know the temps but whites should be in warm or hot water, so that if you add bleach it will mix with the water better. Dark, colored clothes need cold water to avoid fading. I always use hot for whites and cold for towels and colors and any darks or jeans. I also flip my jeans inside out to avoid fading, so if any colors run out they may run back into the jean.

The best is Cold water. Use some baking soda to soften the water instead of using Hot water, so the colors won't fade.

If you wash all clothes in cold, you do save energy, but, I always wash my whites in warm or hot water. They just seem tocome out whiter. I wash colors and darks in cold to keep them from fading.

They say hot for white and warm for colors. I use cold for everything. It is much easier on your clothes and they last longer and look better!
