Is it essential to do a course in journalism first, or can one just get on the job experience to be a researcher for news agencies/magazines?

See if the companies offer internships and what the requirements are. Call the research departments and see if they are hiring. I would imagine that having a degree in journalism, english, info tech, or business would help you immeasurably.

They may ask that you have experience and for that you may have to start out as a peon at a much smaller organization or newspaper.
