I left my job as a paralegal at a solo pracice in late August to travel, etc. before starting law school next summer out of state. I agreed to go back to work starting January for 15-16 weeks full time before leaving for school. I asked for $25/hr for that period (tax season, busiest time). Boss gave me the following options:

1. $20/hr with OT & health ins (the plan is bad though, $1000 deductible + copays for everything.) I'm not interested in this option.

2. $22/hr with OT, no health ins

3. Salary of $1000/week, no OT, equal to $25/hr full time

I figured the difference without OT between #2 and #3 is $1,800. For #2 to equal #3 I figure I'd need to work about 55 hours of overtime during a 15 week period. Now, last year around March and April there were a few Saturdays (maybe one Sunday for a few hours) I worked OT, plus a few hours late here and there. But I don't think I'd get 55 hours of of OT during 15 weeks.

So, I think #3 is the best option. Any thoughts?

Sue, thanks for replying! I wasn't making this kind of money before, it is a special arrangement for this short time and I'm just trying to see what others think. I'm trying to save up to pay for school is all.

The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career. Anyone making that kind of money should be capable of doing the math to figure out the best financial benefit. Why are you asking people on Yahoo?????

Best Wishes,

Sue
