For the same capacity Common Rail engines are far better than pure direct injection versions. They are more responsive, have less noise and vibration (because the compression pressure is maintained), and much smoother delivery, as well as increased efficiency. Power delivery is at least as good or better than other diesel engine versions. Like others it can be enhanced by using a Turbo.
TDI or Turbo Direct (for Direct Injection) Intercooled engines are a generation behind the Common rail versions. It is unfair to compare a Skoda to an accent CRDi, because,
1. the Skoda's engine is mammoth (over 2 liters to the accent's 1.4). Common rail is no match for sheer brute power.
2. Skoda uses a tried and tested tech from VW (It's parent company) for its direct injection cylinder heads (also called Pumpe Duse)- they are a little different from the text book versions.
That said there could be a couple of reason why Skoda does not use the common rail technology (yet).
a. they are relatively expensive to manufacture because of more parts and higher precision requirements in the mechanicals and the engine control unit
b. there is a royalty component to be paid to the primary developers of the technology (Fiat/ Bosch/ Densu - Fiat has common rail engines even in trucks in europe) which makes it all the more expensive.
c. You can get better performance just by having more control over cams, cam timings and cam profiles. The Octavia is an SOHC, but the Laura I think is a DOHC, which means it might have up to 5 valves/ cylinder. Controlling these with variable timing can optimize power delivery and efficiency.
As a side note to your question, the Fiesta is a TDCi, Ford's version of CRDi - Turbo Direct-injection Common RAil intercooled (in reality all turbos will come with intercoolers). Different companies have different terms for common rail versions
Nissan/Renault - DCi
Mahindra - CRDe
Toyota - D4D.

CRDI, or CDI, is probably better. The TDIs are the ones that get the extremely exaggerated bad rap, that they are bone rattling, and give off soot. They aren't that bad, but CRDI is definetley better.
If you keep in touch with car news, you have heard of the new, clean, efficient diesel. it is called biodiesel. All the companies who make CRDIs have been the leaders in this new discovery. Mercedes-Benz, with the E320 CDI, has started to develop an E320 Bluetec, Based on the CDI technology. This means that the biodiesel was devoloped by the CRDI cars. So they also have a pride factor. Although TDIs have been almost perfected, go for the CRDI.

TDI and CRDI
Both engines are great
TDI is smooth as butter or can say refined one
CRDI is also good performance engine.
well certainly when a diesel engine gives 30 per cent more power, an unmatched mileage and to add more they are 20 per cent cheaper than convectional diesel engines.
CRDI is called the Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDi). This is the latest technology for diesel engines — suitable both for passenger cars or commercial vehicles. CRDi is the new state-of-the art diesel technology and is largely being used on premium cars worldwide. CRDi engine is already available in some models in India.
TDI have huge story or history to tell check out source.
The TDi emissions levels are among the lowest ever for Diesel powered engines.
Both are neck to neck.
one advantage of TDI is you can modify it like a gasoline one.
if you want to choose one then the choice is simple .
go for the one which satisfies your requirements

Diesel fuel is now more expensive than unleaded, and you need to do a significant amount of miles each year before the higher mpg of the diesel reverses that cost. If you are doing just 6000-10000 miles a year it will be cheaper to by a petrol engined car.

common rail are by far better....it's like saying do you think a 6.5 gmc diesel is better than a 5.9 cummins?....well duhh that's a no brainer...the common rail is quiter, more responsive, and more emission friendly....sure you can take a TDI, crank up the pump, and the turbo and get 'em to scream but from a factory stand point a common rail is the much better buy
