I use Comodo firewall. This is a good, FREE, firewall. No ad-ware or spy-ware.

I use the latest version and it doesn't slow my PC. I have 2 similar PCs at home. I put Comodo Firewall on one for a few days and left the other without a firewall. Both were about equal speed on the Internet. I then added the firewall to my other PC

Hardware firewalls are good, but expensive. These require maintenance and monitoring just like a software firewall, but can easily be forgotten, leaving vulnerabilities in your home network.

No matter which firewall you use, don't forget to monitor it and keep it up to date.

Yes, software firewalls suck, they slow down your pc and none of them are full proof...

Get a router and ditch the software firewall.
