I take it you're familiar with daylight savings and the science of the transition between night and day. I'm in America, and quite frankily, it seems to be getting darker earlier. I know it's fall here and the days are SUPPOSED to get shorter, but I've noticed a peculiarity this season... it just seems so much darker! Maybe there's just more clouds, making it appear darker. That's probably what's happening over there as well. If it's darker than usual it's probably the overcast. Global warming? No effect on this.

By the way, it's been getting dark around 5:00 and it's not even winter yet. If I recall correctly, last year around this time it was this dark around 6:00 ish.

The reason it is that the sun is at a lower plain which is not going as high in the sky as in the Summer time. So the days are shorter at this time of year the sun will set 3.50pm now you will lose about 10 minute a week of day light. And in January it will set for around 3:20pm. The longest day in the summer is 21st June, that is the Summer Solstice, the Wnter Solstice is 22nd December.

Spring Eqinox 20th March
Summer Solstice 21st June
Autumn Equinox 23rd September
Winter Solstice 22nd December

There are almost 12 hour day and nights on the equator and in the far north and south 6 months of the year is dark and 6 months its light because of the earths axis in relation to the sun.

During the summer the suns axis is more in favour of the sun so we get 14 hour days, but in the winter its the opposite.

Sun sets at 4.30 (approx) in the UK at this time of the year getting ealier each day for the next month or so..It starts to set at about 3.45 and with the very overcast weather we always have at this time of year it it does seem very dark .Nothing to do with global warming ,just our geopostion on planet Earth

Because of the earth orbit.
In summer the orbit of the earth means that the northern surface of the earth are pointing to the sun, so the days are longer. In winter the southern surface of the earth get the longer day.

It's only in the wintertime and it's because the sun is further away from our side of the erath.
