We are having a large gathering (50+) people for a pot-luck Thanksgiving. There are several small children whose plates will need to be prepared for them, making a buffet-style impractical for most guests...Any suggestions on how to serve the food?

I was thinking since I am the host, I could have 5 or so others walk around the tables and serve them that way...less people clamoring for food, I guess. What style is that? Russian?

I think that the buffet would serve you purpose well.

In SERVICE A LA RUSSE, servers pass platters of food to guests, who may either serve themselves or have food served to them. This will probably make the dinner a little less enjoyable for guests having to serve all evening. A ratio of one server for every ten guests is hard work.

The original, not modern day, SERVICE A LA FRANCAISE may be convenient for your situation if you are set against a buffet. Here food is set out on the table, and guests help themselves. Of course it would be wise to just pass the platters from person to person until everyone is covered. But such a service would make it inconvenient for people to get second helpings of foods they really enjoy.

The buffet still sounds the most practical. If children are a concern, perhaps you could designate a couple of people to arrange plates for them.

I have a feeling that you want a dinner that's as elegant as possible, but next year get each relative to contribute $10 and hire servers. You have a large enough family to make this wonderful convenience really practical.

If i was a guest at a dinner for thanksgiving, I would not want someone else serving me. What if i only want a little of this, or maybe that's my favorite dish and I want a lot. And, I have a 6 yr old and I have made many plates for him at many family gathering buffet style meals, and do not mind it. I think someone who has a child expects that. I would do buffet style.

Sounds like the amount that will be at my mother's side on Thanksgiving.

Every year we put all the food onto long tables(i think its 3-4 of them). we put plates on one end and go from there. A line goes on both sides. Its much easier this way. And its how we do it when we rent out this building in town.

But having such a large gathering, you honestly can't put food onto 50+ plates and serve them individually. that would take forever. Besides, you might have a young child that won't eat all of that, or what is put onto the plate.

Buffet would be most practical, the parents of small children can just make them a plate and prepare it when they get to the table.

Yeah hun stick with buffet style. We do it alot with our large gatherings. Clean up is a snap and you could even serve dessert this way. Trust me it isn't all that bad for the kids their parents can fix their plates first.

as we don't have fun Thanksgiving for obtrusive motives, think ofyou've have been given difficulty .... have you ever seen having a Thanksgiving dinner at your place & inviting some British acquaintances, they could probable be up for it because of the fact it extremely is something new & an excuse for a stable meal with countless booze !!!! you should the two verify Marks & Spencers for similair stuff like turkey, mashed potatoes and so on (they could be merchandising it for Christmas by utilising then) in any different case rope in any US acquaintances you be attentive to who can cook dinner pumkin pie or get the caterers in - verify out ex-pat land ie Kensington/Chelsea section ....

I think buffet style will be the most practical. Maybe you can set it up so you can have two lines of people getting their food at once.

I still think buffet style would be best, can't the kids parents make them a plate? they would have to anyway if it was a regular sit down dinner please pass the rolls type thing.

Put up a dry erase board . . . have everyone write their name and what they brought. Then pass out paper and pencil. Have each guest write what they would like on each plate. Appetizer, Main Dish, and Dessert. Serve older guests and children first. Have a good time
