I have a 29 gallon fresh water tank, Ammonia:0 nitrite:0 nitrates:10
Have green alege in water, it's not growing on anything, it's just turning the water green. Will this go away in time? I usually do a 25% water change once a week. would doing a change twice a week help? ... there are two green cat fish, one dwarf gourami, and three bloodfin tetras in the tank. thanks, ~J~

Okay folks, good try, but green water is caused by a unicellular agele floating freely in the water. First off, plecos get Far to big for a tank the size of mine, secondly they do not filter water, they only eat alege if it is growing ON something! I'm needing creative ways to deal with this alege bloom.

There are several ways to deal with it.
1) get a UV unit. expensive, but it will clear the algae in a couple of days
2) get some daphnia and put them in a breeder net in the tank. daphnia love to eat pea soup algae.
3) reduce lighting and add floating plants to ocmpete with the algae for nutrients (e.g. water lettuce, duckweed, frogbit, anacharis or hornwort).

You'll want to make sure you have some surface agitation happening at nite because the algae releases CO2 at nite.

Your fish could be ok without feeding for some days, Are you on nicely water? have you ever tried draining the completed tank and bleach cleansing it and the filter out? have you ever tried putting a submersible pond UV filter out in it?

I would clean the tank more often. And try getting some algae eaters to keep the tank clean. And make sure the fish you put int here are 'clean' fish. I think catfish are 'dirty' fish. Check with an expert at a pet store.
