Hi.. I live near Londoan and go to University in Coventry [Warwick Uni] and before I bought my car I'd use either:
National Express coaches - www.gobycoach.com and there is another really cheap coach company called
Megabus - http://www.megabus.com/uk/ where single tickets start from £1. The nearer the time you book the more they cost a bit like Easyjet. Really they are the only options for cheap public transport as trains are far more expensive.
Third option could be to car share.. giving someone half the petrol costs if they are going the same way. Try the GumTree website on:

Check on www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ if you book in advance you can get cheap tickets. If you can travel off-peak, even better.
You could also try travelling to warwick parkway instead of coventry and then getting a lift/bus to coventry
