It's things like love, and friendship that truly make us happy. I could own the whole world, but if I had no one to love, or love me, I would be dead inside.

While there may be no single authoritative verdict, research has shown that happiness is a relative emotion.

Material things may make you happy, if it gives you a sense of social superiority.

Imagine two individuals A and B. A lives in a poor locality, where the average income is $200 per month. B lives in an affluent locality, where the average monthly income is $60,000.

If A earns $250 and B earns $55,000, chances are that A will be a much happier person as compared to B, despite his meager earnings.

Therefore it is not the quantity, but the relative quality that affects happiness.

You may be a lone individual living in the most comfortable palace in the middle of the desert. No number of gadgets or money will give you the sense of happiness that a man whose posessions are acknowledged and admired by his peers.

I think that if you feel good about how you look, what you have etc. You can ultimately be more comfortable with yourself, and therefore more happy. But, a lot more than material possessions go into that equation, and I know that material "things" will not save my soul... so, while these things make me happy, I also know I cannot put my complete faith in them for that reason. I realize that I am responsible for my own happpiness, and while "things" may aid in that happiness... it's still up to me to be happy.

Some material things do. I know you have those who say material things can't make you happy. I don't think that one should invest all of their happiness on material items. Laughter, also makes me happy. That's not material and sometimes not always easy to access. I like a really good joke, fun loving people or just a good time.

Material possessions create short-lived happiness...whether it's a shiny BMW or a shiny toe ring - the novelty WILL eventually wear off...usually happens as soon as it it aquired or when a want of new material object replaces it...which leads to the cycle continuing inevitably.

Beyond the necessary items for physical survival - no, material things will not make you happy inside.

If you can't be happy with yourself, your inner self, then you live a superficial life and material things will not/can not feed your soul.

Only the things that improve the quality of life such as things you can do with the people you love. Travel trailer, bicycles etc. Other things that make life comfortable are good too. Decent clothes, good glasses, shoes and a nice affordable home. Most other things are gluttonous such as jewelry & slick electronics. They do nothing for us except provide instant gratification.

No, material things are but temporary life comforts, the love of my family, the kindness of my friends, the generosity of others to other people...these things make me happy.

Happiness passes quickly, in particular with things. True joy is an inward fact, joy that I have a God who is looking out for me and taking care of me. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my Word will never pass away - Jesus
