Hi if you live in the uk you can go to your main library they should have information about your area and old newpaper clipping dating back hundreds of years hope this helps also try putting your street name up on yahoo see what it comes up with you could also make a web page to see if anybody knows what your area used to be or advertise in your local newspaper.

What area do you live? the local council would be a good place but without an area it's hard to supply you with a relevant website.

You could start by speaking to someone at your local council - they may have details or be able to point you in the right direction. Otherwise you could go to your local library to see if they hold the appropriate records there.
