I think you were asking for a reason why people consider the U.S. a "pure" democracy, rather than definitions of that, though they were very informative.
I think that most Americans keep referring to this country's government as a democracy for two reasons:
A) They're brainwashed to do so, from grade school on, continuing with media propaganda, which leaves out all the very NON-democratic aspects of our government in general and especially during the current administration.
B) It makes them feel better about themselves as Americans, somehow morally superior in relation to other governments. It's easier to think that invading other countries is "okay" because the press and your prez tell you that they're "spreading democracy".

This was a very good questions and I didn't know the answer off the top of my head and did a little digging and this is what I have come up with: (this is for people that didn't know the differance, like myself)
Democracy (literally "rule by the people", from the Greek demos, "people," and kratos, "rule") is a form of government for a nation state, or for an organization in which all the citizens have an equal vote or voice in shaping policy or electing government officials. While the term democracy is often used in the context of a political state, the principles are also applicable to other bodies, such as universities, labor unions, public companies, or civic organizations.
A federal republic is a federation of states with a republican form of government. A federation is composed of a number of self-governing states united by a federal government. In a federation, unlike in a unitary state, the self-governing status of autonomous regions is constitutionally entrenched and cannot be revoked by a unilateral decision of the central government. The states in a federation also maintain all political sovereignty that they do not yield to the federation. Usage of the term republic is inconsistent but, as a minimum, it means a state or federation of states that does not have a monarch as head of state.

Its a democratic republic. The people vote for the officials who then rule over the country. Its called a democracy because its just how "democratic republic" got shortened. and the government has evolved over time to become less of a true democracy through different legislation and drastic growth in population.

We are a Democratic Republic. The Republic meaning that the people are represented by Representatives. The Democratic meaning that we democratically elect our Representatives. Unlike some versions of Republics where the Representatives are not elected by the people.
So both are right, we are a Republic and we are a Democracy.

I agree with you. The US is a republic. Democracy is a close synonym but not completely identical.

It is a Democracy. It isn't the purest form because that extreme isn't viable for a successful government.
