I am sorry but I can`t stop laughing at the "penal" colony days !! I understand what you are asking, but if there are any, I have not heard of them Which surprises me because most Australians like to boast about their `humble` beginnings. It is an interesting question, I wonder if anyone "owns up" to being of `humble` origin?

Hi, once transported to Oz the prisoners found it very hard to get hold of many luxerys including hair dye, therefore many of them would have had roots.

Unless I have got the context of your question wrong and you meant "Roots" in the Australian meaning of the word. In which case is quite likely that despite seperating the sexes that with a vast lack of entertainment a fair bit of rooting went on and so yes a significant number of them would have had roots.

I once had a quick education in "american" when I asked a girl from USA if I could root through her drawers for a rubber. This means in english I wanted to check the drawer in her desk to get an eraser !!! She was on the floor for ages laughing with tears coming from her eyes ( we were working in a bank).
If I understand your question correctly, the answer is yes as some of my ancestors were sent to Australia in chains and the family tree now shows decendents as famous University Professors, industrialists and one won a gold medal in Sydney olympics.
