I just recently got out of a long relationship. I have been in contact/communication with her since we broke up. Last night she called me telling me her grandfather had passed away. I knew the family pretty well, and her grandfather as well. I'm just terrible with emotions, and don't know what to say to her/how to console her. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tell her how sorry you are that he passed. If she feels like talking about, talk about how he was and tell some stories from the times you were around. If you see her give her a hug. It will make a big difference.

It's best just to say u are sorry to hear her loss and u are there for her if she ever needs to talk. There is really nothing u can say that will make her feel better........only time does that, but just that fact that u are there for her as a friend is a comfort to most.

Dude. if she is your ex you need to axe all communication with her. You will just end up back with her and after a while you will start having the same problems you did that caused you to break up initially.
