Some fish carry the eggs inside until they are ready to hatch, some snakes do this too, it is a survival trait. Some fish are good at guarding the eggs, like cichlids, who are quite aggressive. Guppies, mollies ect are not aggressive and if any fish came by their egg piles they wouldn't be able to defend them and the brood would get eaten. It's really neat to watch the live bearers give birth, not only do the babys come out fully developed the egg sacks come out too, along with a few still borns still in the eggs.

Several non-mammalian animals have live young some snakes do it, some fish, some amphibians even do it. there are even two animals that are technically mammals (they have mammary glands) that lay eggs (spiny echidna(sp?) and platypus).

it happens, the fish that deliver live babies (fry) seem to have a higher success rate per amount. they usually only a max of 20 fry with a bigger % making it to adulthood, while egg layers can have 300 or more eggs and a lower % survive.

Guppies, swordtails, and other livebearer fish hatch the eggs inside the female. If you have an opportunity to watch one of these fish giving birth, you can see the remains of the yolk sac on many of the fry.

Mammals aren't defined by how they deliver their young. All mammals breath air, have hair and feed their young on milk.
