Basically, you should play the games starting from Final Fantasy 7 - 12. Actually, there is no plot relating the different games to each other. Each Final Fantasy game is unrelated to the others, with the exception of Final Fantasy X and X-2 which is actually just one story divided into 2 games... Another thing - FF7 - 9 can only be played in PlayStation whereas FFX and X-2 are on the PS2....
You might also want to consider skipping FF9 since, in my opinion, it has such a lame storyline, gameplay and also sucks in terms of character design and battle graphics.
The other games in the FF series are all good, especially FF7 whose plot is sooooooooooo excellent that SquareSoft-Enix even made a spin-off game - FF7: Dirge of Cerberus for the PS2. This game picks off around 2 years (?) after the events in FF7: Advent Children. By the way, Advent Children is a GREAT movie that follows the events of the original FF7 game. It also has top-class graphics better than that of FF: Spirits Within. After playing FF7, I suggest you watch Advent Children because FF7's ending is sort of like a cliffhanger which continues into Advent Children...
FF8 and FFX and X-2 are also very good games, but personally, I like the character desgins of FF8 over that of FFX. However, FFX and X-2 have a deeper and more interesting stroyline as well as top-notch gameplay...
The Final Fantasy series is indeed one of, if not the best, under the RPG genre. Not only does it have fantastic gameplay and high-quality graphics (for the PS2), the soundtrack and plot are also notably good; rivaling that of plots in movies...

It really doesn't matter what order you play the games in, although the graphics, of course, get progressively better as the series goes on.
The only games that are truly connected are Final Fantasy X and X-2 (X-2 is a direct sequel to X), and Final Fantasy VII, and FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (DofC is an indirect sequel to FFVII.)
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is the first FF movie, and it has nothing to do with any of the games. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, is a sequel to FFVII, and should probably not be watched before you play FFVII, if you don't want to spoil the ending. Any of the other games, like Tactics or Chocobo Racing are not directly related to any of the games.
And just for the record, FFVII, FFVIII and IV are for the PS1, FFX, X-2, DofC, and XII are for the PS2. FFXI can either be played online via your PS2 or over the Internet.
The earlier Final Fantasies (before VII) are a bit harder to get ahold of. I believe IV, V and VI are for Super Nintendo, and the first Final Fantasy was for the original NES, although the earlier games have been remade for Game Boy: Advance.
Hope this helped!

If you're looking to be blown away, I would play FF12, 10, and 11. If you enjoy those, then play the other games. The graphics aren't as great, but they're still enjoyable games. My personal fave is still FF7.
Most of the games and movies are different from one another. The only similarities are the fighting style (except in 12), summons and the 'feel' of the game. The Final Fantasy movie, Advent Children, is a sequel to the game FF7. Pretty...but incredibly boring in my opinion. FFX-2 is a sequel to FFX. It's fun and quirky but far from the typical epic feel of a FF game.

None of the plots are connected (except X-2 and X).
Each final fantasy is a stand alone creation.
There are several ways you could start.
If you are brand new to gaming - I'd start with X (or Ten). It's the easiest to pick up and learn to play, and it has a good story and great visuals.
You could play them in order - just know that the first came out like 20 yrs ago and the graphics are going to be dated.

if you've never played a final fantasy, why is your avatar named after the dragoon from FFIX? unless, of course, it's the norse goddess.
anyway, to answer the question.
there is no one game to start with. usually your first game that you do good in will be your favorite.
for me, that was IV
all of the games have different, but comparable, battle mechanics.
as has already been mentioned, storywise, only X and X-2 are connected
if i was to recommend any of the games, i would like to say IV. you'll get a great story. you'll get good gameplay. and as you play the others in order up to the most recent games, graphics will start to be more important than story - most notably seen in FFVII and FFX

Play the games first! The plots are somewhat connected but they seem more like different tales for each game. The only game is Final Fantasy VII to have different variations to tie the game (Dirge of Cerberus, and the movie Advent Children).

The game Final fantasy is great (for me)because the game was quite fun.You can start with FF7 first if u want to as the storyline was
the best in all FF(based on my friends) then, you may play FF8,FF9,FF10,FFX2(the second version of FF10) and then FF12.(FF11 need to pay as you need to connect to the internet).you SHOULD NOT skip the storyline and it is related. I also recomanded
to play FF12 because it was quite different from all other FF's.
