#1, the good old fashioned plunger. Works like a champ. The trick with a tub is that you'll have to plug the overflow drain with a wet cloth so that the air pressure created by the plunger is forced DOWN the drain and now back out the overflow.
You can try Drano or stuff like that, but try the plunger first. They are very effective.

Our drain constantly gets clogged because both my mom and I have long hair. We have one of those drain plugs that it attached to the drain. All you need to do is unscrew it to take it off and remove the hair. Then it's good as new.
For normal drains, just use anything small enough for you to stick in it like a screwdriver and remove the hair. That should clear it. You can also buy some draino at the hardware store.

Block you overflow with a wad of wet tissue then beg or borrow a wet vac cleaner and suck the stuff out of the plug hole. Works every time for me. Engineer. By the way those donkeys who said undo the screw in the middle of the plug hole need shooting. This can cause the drain assembly to drop from the bath!!
