A nerd with style to be blunt. At least a preppy style.

I think people were tagged prep earlyon when they were wearing expensive cloths that were more common with a later rich lifestyle. I also think there is a sense of scholar to them without being to book nerdish.

Also search preppy sports I had a post about that a while back.

In Mass/Ct we have many prep schools/academy linked below.

My first link I consider a more true preppy style of dress compared to the more fake preppy of lacoste shirts with collars up.

I think it's a reference to prep school kids. Usually these were more well to do (but not always RICH, as some seem to think). Later it only meant a certain style - not limited to prep school students.

One not need be "rich" to be preppy. It really is just a clean cut look, kind of cool nerd. Preppy guys would usually wear casual slacks and a polo shirt, and have a neat, clean appearance, short hair, clean shaven, etc. I don't know about preppy girls too much.

Preppy means the person dresses in classic clothing and has a very neat appearance. The clothing for both men and women is the classic pullover shirt with three buttons, short sleeve, usually a designer logo on the shirt, such as Ralph Loren. The long sleeve shirt is usually a button down collar, also with a designer logo on the shirt. The men wear kakki pants, or pants that are cotton, a v-neck cable knit sweater, a blue blazer jacket. Women can wear similar wear, however, can wear a pleated plaid skirt, also the kakki pants. The clothing is usually designer labeled.

When I was a kid in the 1980s, people wanted to look preppy. The word "prep" comes from the upper-class kids who attend prep-schools, usually private high schools that prepare you for college better than public schools.

The preppies were clean-cut, wore penny-loafer shoes, IZOD polo shirts, and drove cars like BMWs or Audies.

Nowadays it isn't so cool to be a prep. I'm not sure anybody wants to be called one, but they get accused of it if they buy their clothes from an expensive store, or look like they are trying to belong to a country club. We called those kids bourgeois.
