I actually was lucky because when I was young I was somewhat of a "celebrity" myself for a short while (musician in a known band), a very short while but got to mingle with a lot of "bigger" celebrities than I. The funny thing is this: when you "think" you belong in the same "club" and they (the celebrities) do too it's like you've known each other all your life (you have no clue who the hell they really are and the same for them about you), you're on a first name basis, party like you are buddies. But when "fame" fades (either way) then you lose touch. Personally I was always myself, no pretention and never snotty with others. Looking back, celebrity is just the fact that there are more people that know your name today than there were yesterday and tomorrow as many will forget it so when I meet a celebrity these days (and I do, my girlfriend was a PA to a well known singer and worked for Sony, NY and keeps in touch with a lot of people) I just say hello the same way I would my neighbor. They are only people and want the same things I want: peace, privacy and respect.

Not exactly. I met a few people from bands in Seattle when I used to live there, like Goldfinger and Super Deluxe, but they were just normal guys for the most part, just hanging around the concerts that I used to go to. I said hi and gushed a little bit, asked for signatures of course, but it was really not that big a deal for me.
Now, if I were ever to meet Hugh Laurie, on the other hand.....I'd probably faint or something ~ the man is brilliant, I love him!

Beau Bridges, Christopher Walken, Samuel L. Jackson (three separate occasions -weird I know! )... I have to admit, I tried REALLY hard not to react.
They were all very nice. The odd part is, because they were all honest to goodness run-ins, so the whole celebrity thing was like a big white elephant in the room no one mentioned. It was strange but cool.

I've met quite a few, Keith Urban, Ron White, Tom Berenger, Keith Carradine, Ali McGraw, Bette Midler, Kris Kristofferson, Ernest Borgnine and was just respectful of their time and space. BTW Ron White is awesome!

I haven't met a decent celebrity yet, but a friend and I were out one night for dinner when we both thought we recognized the woman infront of us. It took us about 15 minutes to work out she was one of the contestants from Australia's last Big Brother series.

I've met more than my share of celebrities, and about half of the time have done so in random, unexpected places.
My favorite of the random encounters was meeting Alan Rickman (who I **adore**) at a Royal Shakespeare Company production of "Hamlet" in London on April Fools' Day in 2002. There were four empty seats to my right, and just before the lights came down, people were making their way down the row on my left.
I stood up to let the people past - two women came first, and I nearly fell over when I saw who followed (Rickman was 3rd and one of his co-stars from "Galaxy Quest" came next). I had been calmly writing out postcards to my friends and family before his party arrived, but the tone of my writing changed immediately after they took their seats. I had gone from describing my horrid plane ride over to writing things like, "Oh. My. God. You are not going to believe who is sitting three feet away from me!!!"
Instead of paying any attention to what happened on the stage, I spent the play trying to figure out how much I could actually impose on him without being rude or too disruptive. I ruled out asking for a picture - it would have been different if he had been working (i.e., out promoting a film), but he was really just out with friends, his s.o., and whoever else as a private citizen - but decided that discreetly asking for an autograph was OK.
He was very gracious when I spoke to him, and kindly gave me the autograph. It's one of my favorite stories to tell (I'm leaving out some very funny details in the re-telling of it here).
Two of my other favorites have been Matthew Perry (long ago - when he was 18 and I was 17) and the actor/ director/ writer/ producer/ genius for whom my Yahoo! ID is named (Kenneth Branagh), but these were not wholly random encounters (I met the former at a charity event and the latter at a film festival). These were both also positive experiences.

I've met Steve Kerr, the former professional basketball player and current announcer on TNT at a Spurs game several years ago and got his autograph for my kids. The guy is a class act all around.
Also, when we were in Washington DC, my family and I met, "had coffee with" and had our picture taken with Kay Bailey Hutchison, one of Texas' US Senators.
They guy above who played golf with Alice Cooper is right. These are just regular people like you and me who just happen to be noteworthy for some reason. Treat them like you would like to be treated and don't make a big deal of their celebrity.

Yes. I met my hero.
I was sitting behind Cristiano Ronaldo at a United match. I had a pen in my hand leaned over to poke him to ask him for an autograph. He was texting on his phone (but I assume it was Portugese) otherwise I might have tried catching what he was texting.. haha. Anyway, I finally poked his shoulder, and in the same instant my pen flew out of my hand and I drew a big black line across my face. He just stared at me... and I asked him if he would sign my book. He kindly did without mocking me.
How embarassing.

I asked Mindy if she wanted some insurance.
Everyone else I just smiled and shook their hand.
