The situation you are talking about is called a "run". There possibly hasn't been a "run" on a bank since the Great Depression. Nowadays, banks are allowed to take a reasonable amount of time to honor very large withdrawals. That's because they have your money tied up earning interest. In other words, everybody's money is still there... but they wouldn't necessarily be able to get their hands on it at a moment's notice.

The problem there is that the truly wealthy don't have a beef with the bank. So if all the poor people went and took out their money, the bank wouldn't be hurt all that bad. The big money would still be there.

Impossible some of it is tied up in Cd's some is invested. And then if we put in the mattress some of us would find out that we have greedy and selfish mates, that would take the money out and use it on themselves. The possibility of break ins, forget it. The Banks are OK what is the problem? we would loose the interest.
