The Brisbane Cricket Ground is known as The Gabba, due to its location in the Brisbane suburb of Woolloongabba, Queensland, Australia.

As for Woolloongabba, there are two theories about the meaning of the Aboriginal words from which "Woolloongabba" is derived - "whirling water" or "fight talk place".

Aussies use nicknames for most things and cricket and football grounds are no exception.

The MCG is often called the 'G'.

The Perth Cricket ground is called the WACA. (not W.A.C.A)

Brisbane cricket ground is called the Gabba cos it is in the suburb "Woolloongabba".
The suburb comes from an aboriginal word meaning "water holes".

The Brisbane Lions AFL footy team also plays there and their fans have given it a further nickname " The Gabbatoir", because it's so hard for visiting teams to win there. The Aussie cricket team could probably also claim that.
The last time the Aussies lost their was in 1988 to the legendary West Indies team featuring Viv Richards, Ambrose, Marshall, Haynes etc.
