I sent several letters with old 37 cent stamps twelve days ago. So far, none of them have come back--but they didn't all have return addresses, either. I'm just wondering how long it would take for them to be returned, and if they are not, can I assume that my local post office is too overwhelmed to check?

In Australia, if you post a letter with insufficient postage they still deliver it to the addressee.
However if your return address is on the back they will send you a bill for the missing postage plus a fee.
If there is no return address they still deliver it to the addressee.
No one is charged the missing postage in that instance.

The ones with no return address do not come back. Makes sense, right? The others may take days to weeks.

I would resend it. I mailed something last Monday and got it back yesterday stamped Insufficient Postage. I mailed it the day of the change and got it back a week later. If it's truly important, get another

If you don't have a return address on it, it can take months to come back

If you are sending it to a company, the company on the other end will be required to pay the difference when they receive the mail

If you are not sending to a company but to a person only, sooner or later it will come back.

How tacky can you be???
