I was raised in a poor immigrant family. Some low cost foods include pasta, potatoes, rice, bread, and cabbage. Olive oil is the preferred oil. There was a time when I was in college that I survived on pasta and tomato paste. The 3 8 oz boxes of pasta and 3 small cans of tomato paste cost $1 each so I spent $2 daily on food. I also ate rice with tomato paste. Potatoes may be cooked in a variety of was including seared in Olive oil. Bread and cabbage are very 'filling'. Drink lots of water - it helps.
