It's just the kind of book that can be applied to all age groups. Addictive, can't describe why and maybe that makes it even more interesting.

I understand your question; and also understand why you think people might yell at you. Some can take these things very seriously.
I didn't read the first two novels, but was constantly hearing on the news about people camping out, and going crazy over each new book in the series. Since I've never seen anyone go crazy with anticipation about a book before (a BOOK???) I thought I'd check it out. I read the third novel, and was totally enthralled.
For me, what makes these books special is the author's ability to create a completely different universe that operates under its own rules, and yet, is totally normal and believable. These aren't fairytales; and that's what makes them so marvelous. The stories are told in such a way as to make you believe that this is a totally normal world with totally normal people who just also happen by the merest of circumstances to be magical. You see, the biggest difference is that fairytales attempt to play up the whole idea of the extraordinary. They revel in the "gee whiz" factor; and J.K. Rowling doesn't do this. she has the most incredible talent for presenting the most phenomenal alternate reality as though it's something we all know (or at least SHOULD know). And that's what makes her work so much fun. She creates a world that simply envelopes and absorbs the reader.
The stories are richly textured and the characters wonderfully and fully humanized. And while each novel can be enjoyed seperately, there is additional enjoyment in knowing that each novel is contributing to the suspense of the ultimate clash between good and evil that will occur in the final novel. I can't wait.
Hope this answer helps. Cheers, mate.

I think, like a lot of other fantasy novels, it's a chance to escape. It's an escape from the ordinary, mundane lives we all sometimes lead. It opens up the question in the mind of, "What if?". What if this happened to me or someone I know? Just the very idea of that is enough for people to buy EVERY Harry Potter book and absorb them quicker than water on a sponge. Love it or hate it, fantasy novels aren't leaving the shelves of bookstores anytime soon. Unless, of course, those books are being picked up by ravenous 7th graders.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN 'Why is Harry Potter so popular?!' lol :P
I love Harry Potter. the storyline-young wizard fighting bad guy-is actually kind of simple but JK Rowling has made it in to an incredible adventure. her characters are fantastic and in every book she manages to squeeze in genuine sensitivity, serious issues, humour, fear and all other problems with growing up. I'd totally recommend reading all the books and watching all the movies-I know everybody has different taste but I totally love them :D

I finally read the first book to see what all the fuss was about, and although it was entertaining...I was totally underwhelmed! I think there are so many better kids books out there. It is great that this series is getting a lot of kids interested in books again...but I have no interest in reading the other books in the series. I saw the first two movies...but got bored with them as well and have not seen any since. So, I really don't know why they are so popular either.

have you read any of the books? you should try reading the first one and see what you think. seriously!
for a long time i wondered what all the fuss was about and wrote them off as silly children's books until one of my coworkers harassed me into reading the first one. i was very pleasantly surprised! the books are extremely well written and they're entertaining and provide me with a great escape. they're not fairytale-ish at all.
i don't think everyone would be into them though.

It's not just about magic.
People like stories where the hero is underdog, rises to meet challenges and succeeds, but not to "superhero" status.
