replace your black print head, canons have them separate so you replace them as necessary (unlike HP where they get replaced every time and epson who have a 'magic' head that never breaks down, as if...)

You're a little sketchy on what is happening but here are a couple of thoughts.
***************************************************************
Run the print-head cleaning utility a couple of times. Open a fairly substantial text document, like a letter or memo, and print 6 or 8 copies to see if it will at least begin to print portions of the document. If it does print more copies of the document. Sometimes the lines that supply the ink to the printhead get dried out and need to be "primed" and printing several copies will usually get the ink flowing again.
*******************************************************************
Occasionally, something may corrupt a portion of your software. Another action is to repair the software.

Uninstall all your printer software using the Add/Remove utility.
Disconnect the printer from your PC. Reboot the PC.
This should put you in a state whereby the PC recognizes that there is no longer a printer installed.
Install the printer drivers and reconnect the printer.
Reboot the PC. The PC should now recognize the printer.
Try printing a text page.

Hope this helps.

Not sure what the cause could be. Are you sure that the black and color cartridges are not accidentally swapped in the machine? Have you tried switching out a new ink cartridge to see if that makes a difference?
