I notice this a lot on the street, in general. Young women passing by me who otherwise wouldn't make eye contact with me for even a split-second tend to focus their attention on objects (i.e. envelopes, groceries, files, etc.,) that I'm carrying on my person.

I'm not bothered by this, just a little intrigued. Are women just plain nosy, or do they prefer to "check out" men without making eye contact?

Just when you think you know everything about women, they unleash more surprises at you. =) Gotta love 'em.

women tend to "check out" their surroundings frequently... if she's interested she'll probably make eye contact. Most women instead of driving with directions such as left on 1st street, go more with landmarks like left at the library, etc. We tend to focus more on the details.... ask any man that is checking out a "hot" woman anything about her other than breasts, etc. and they have no clue.. ask a woman something about a man she's been checking out and she'll tell you what color clothes he had on, shoes, hair/eye color, what he was carrying, oh and if he is wearing a wedding ring or if he has a wedding ring "line" Yes guys, we look for the tell tale "line/mark" of a recently removed ring too !!!

A woman has peripheral vision also, so she can see you looking at her and her main objective is for you to see her looking at you without actually looking at you ,,,GET IT. I guess, well it sounded good in my head but that's how I see it, maybe you shouldn't look at them and if this is an ongoing, same people type of thing, watch and see if you get a change in reaction. I f you don't pay them attention then that will make them want your attention, then maybe they will make eye contact and possibly speak like a respectable person should. I cant stand when anyone passes, and sometimes they do make eye contact , but don't speak

Michele A is quite right.

In addition, women are aware of potentially dangerous situations in a way that men normally aren't.

When walking alone, particularly if it's dark, it's a good idea to keep your eyes open, and pay attention to what people (men, especially) have in their hands.

Sad, but true.

what you have on you tells us abit about who you are.... you could be interesting, or not...... And yes I will admitt that I am just as nosy as most women are..... we also want to analyze our every surrounding.... and if a woman is checking you or your stuff out, well than that might be a good thing... but not always! Dont pay it much attention, its just like guys checkin out cars, hot ones and pieces of **** too....!

It's probably an atavism. Interesting point, it had never occurred to me...
