We had 2 pacu's (they look like pirranas) that where the size of dinner plates and about 3 inches thick. Many people comented on what beautiful fillets we would get off them, so we thought about it. The fish are in a small concentration of water so there would probley be an amonia taste to them(even with weekly water changes they still have more waste in the water then in the wild) Plus all the chemicals you treat the water with. The last thing you need is to put more chemicals into your body, it's not like we get enought from our food, water and air.... So Poko and Cu got to spend the rest of their days being fish (and smashing heaters and ripping up plants...)

That depends on the fish. River fish like Snakeheads, Three-Spot Gouramies, Tin Barbs, Knife Fish, Giant Gouramies and Tilapias are known to make nice dishes. No joke...

Actually you'll find many of the fish we keep as pets can be a large part of the diet in the local areas in which they're found, particularly larger fish like cichlids. I don't think it's that they cannot be eaten by people, I think it's that people (in our society) don't want to.

They probably don't taste good or we would be eating them. There must be a lot of fish in rivers, lakes and the ocean we don't eat for the same reason. And some of the fish we eat doesn't taste good to me either.

Here's an idea...

Why don't you stop worrying about eating your poor goldfish, and go to the grocery store and buy a fish that's already dead, and meant for you to eat??

I believe that certain species of arowana ARE considered food fish in their home countries.
