I think you can't just mention one cause I think there are a lot of factors that influence on poverty. I'll mention you two of them but there are a lot of factors. One of them is the lack of education. Education opens your mind to different ideas, different subjects, cultures, in a word it gives you tools for life. If you have education it doesn't necessarily mean you are going to do well in life and you are not going to be poor but at least you have a better chance to get a good life level. Another factor I think is cultural factors like ideas of a certain culture. For instance in Mexico (where I am from) the poverty rate is huge but people tend to blame it all on the government rather than to say it's their fault or to stand up and start doing something. For them, the government is supposed to give them everything, job, house, food, school, and they are just supposed to sit down and wait for father government to come along. Mexico was a conquered territory of Spain and since then we've been dragging such ideas.
Hope this helps!

Some good responses!
1) Illiteracy
2) Cultural oppression of women (Not allowing women the same opportunities & right to self-determination as men)
3) Inequality of resource distribution within a country (South Africa)
4) Government corruption (many examples)
5) Climactic severity(extremes of cold or dryness)
6) Cultural nonvalue of nonreligious education (the Koran is all anyone needs to know)
7) Inefficient systems of government (such as socialism)
8) War (makes business unsustainable, destroys infrastruction & human capital, ruins chance for education, induces mental illnesses from horrible experiences)

Poverty is a direct result of poor education, apathy and laziness.
With out a proper education one will not have the ability to find a good career. Also, entire regions and countries for that matter with poor educational systems have a very low standard of living.
In wealthy countries, education and hard work is what creates new opportunities.

The Politically Incorrect and precise answer is:
Illegitimacy Rates:
Black ~ 68%
Hispanic ~ 45%
White ~ 24%
Asian ~ 15%
Median Household Income:
Asian ~ $61,000
White ~ $51,000

Black ~ $31,000
Must be rich people and Corporate America's fault. Those rich people and corporations somehow cause pregnancy in poor people. That's it. It has NOTHING to do whatsoever with personal behavior. NOTHING. The proper thing to do in America is blame others for your problems.

Lazyness.
If people went to school, studied hard, and grow up to get good jobs,
they wouldn't be poor and have to struggle financially.
Most people nowadays prefer to just sit around and have everything
given to them..but that's not how life is supposed to be.

It's the greed of wealthy people
and unfairness at high levels. Why do we need more than a house, clothing and food while a big part of population is dying of hunger and need.
