What kinds of fish can you fit in a 5 gallon tank?

It has a 3-stage bio-wheel filter and I'd be willing to do water changes every week... is there something I can put in besides bettas? (And DON'T say goldfish.) What kind of fish could I put in there?

I have a planted 5 gallon with four Harlequin Rasboras, one male veil tail Betta, and two otocinclus catfish. The otto cats are good tank cleaners and don't grow big like plecos. (even dwarf plecos grow to at least 5 inches.)

A school of eight neon tetras would work if you want a species tank. Or you could mix, 4 & 4, with another samll tetra (lemon or cardinal)

White cloud minnows are another attractive, small fish.

Do 15% water changes once a week, perferably with a gravel vacuum, and good luck!

* One single betta fish. Nothing else. But I would upgrade to a 2.5 + gallon tank (filtered, heated and *cycled*) as soon as possible. Tetras and barbs are very active and social fish and need a lot of room to swim so they would be unhappy in a small tank like that.

The rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. Thus, up to 5 one inch fish, or two 2 1/2 inch fish, or any other compatible combination. With water changes, good aeration and a good filtration system, an extra inch or two of fish might be ok.

You can put all kinds of small fish in your tank.

Go to a pet store and look around. I used to work at a pet store, and we had tons of small fish that you could put into a 5 gallon tank.



Just be careful of overcrowding!!

One fish per gallon is a good rule to follow.

Also, be sure not to mix aggressive and non-aggressive fish.

And don't over-feed!
