On the first day of your next period

The Pill comes in monthly packs, and the entire pack must be taken for the pill to be effective. Most women are told to start taking the pill on a Sunday, or on the first day of their period. There is nothing special about Sundays when it comes to birth control, it is just an easy way to remember what day of the week you started on. Depending on the type of pill a woman has been prescribed, there will either be 28, or 21 pills in a pack. It is a good idea to take the pill everyday at the same time, it is more effective, and it is harder to forget if it is part of your daily routine. (Also, if a woman is experiencing breakthrough bleeding, taking the pill at the same time everyday can help).

A woman will take her first pill on either the first Sunday of her period, or on the first day of her period, depending on what her doctor prescribed. If she has a 28 pill pack, she should take all 28 pills and then start the new pack immediately. If she has a 21 pill pack, she should complete one pack, wait 7 days, and then start another pack. In both cases, the new pack should be started regardless of what day of the week it is, or what day of her period she is on.

When a woman first starts taking the pill she should also be using a back up form of contraception, such as condoms. The pill works by stimulating a woman's body to cease ovulation, so it is safest to use a backup through the first cycle of pills; our ovaries can't just come to a screetching halt.

Sometimes it takes your body 2-3 months to adjust to the pill - start soon (usually they have you do the Sunday during/after your next menstrual cycle), but if you're that adament about not having kids yet use a condom or alternate form of contraception as well.

The longer the pill is in your system, the better chance it has of working...I'd say start now. Oh, and don't take the desogen pill. I'm 38 weeks pregnant, and was on desogen until I was 8 weeks...when I found out. A close friend of ours got pregnant on desogen literally two days after quitting the pill.

I started bith control three months before my hubby and I (we were both virgins before getting married, btw) got married almost 5 years ago. That way, I knew the pill would be in my system fully.

Birth control pills are not good for you. If you can get him to use rain coats that would be better for your health. The pill will also make you gain weight.

I agree with yesterday. ;) It takes a month before it is in your system. So you will need to use some back up birth control and or be prepared for the inevitable.

supposedly takes 1 month to be effective, and you usually start it the day your period ends, so if you want to avoid pregnancy, use another form of contraceptive until you've finished the first pack, but keep in mind, the pill isn't 100%, i know lots of gals who got preggy while on the pill. if you want something more effective i'd recommend the depo shot, but talk to your dr about it.

as soon as possible. BUT let me tell you something that my ob/gyn did not tell me. the hormones in birth control pills will affect your sex drive in a negative way. it can slowly cause you to lose interest in sex. it happened to me and i stopped taking it almost a year ago, i'm still not back to normal and it has caused some problems in my marriage. good luck!
