I forgot to add: I am out of the country studying abroad now. His birthday is next week and I will not be home until late December--so unless I ask him to wait a month, I can't really do anything personal with him at this time.

Whenever I can't figure out what to get my father I ask my mom! She lives with him and knows him best. She's always full of helpful hints about what he's been eying in the stores or taling about or that sort of thing. If your dad doesn't have a significant other around try to contact a good friend of his and see if they've got any ideas to help!

Well, the best gift you can give him is you on his doorstep. But, if that's not possible, then mail him something very sentimental. Find a beautiful pocket watch, have something special engraved on it. I saw one that had a train on it, I love trains, it was very beautiful. Of course, I'm a girl and wouldn't buy one, but they are nice to look at. Some say #1 dad, there are wolves, eagles, horses, and things on them. And since your prince range is kind of up there, this should be a peice of pie. You know, most older men who don't like sports are into more classy things. See if you can find one of those feather pens and ink set. You can have it personalized. A nice, warm, brown leather jacket. Not the sporty kind, but the classic kind. Find a photo of you too, and frame it in a beautiful frame and send that too. Well, good luck, I bet your father is a sweet man. It just seems that those who can leave the country for college, have sweet families.

Thinking about what it would be like to be able to afford $150-200 for a gift......There are plenty of us in need. Help someone out in his name. Pay the electric bill or buy a bunch of groceries for a single mom or something. Seems like that would have a deeper meaning than some 'thing' or a fancy dinner. And I know it would be something that that mom would never forget.

try an mp3 player downloaded with all his favorite tunes! or a customized photo album of his 50 years in this life, or diamond studded personalized cufflinks, notice the the *PERSONALIZATION* make him feel his worth!! if he fishes new rods with his name imprinted on them (my grandmother was so excited almost ran through the house when she got those!) or maybe get them anyone so that he can enjoy a new hobby (my grandmother would disappear to anybody's fish creek and come home feeling revitalized) a gold lighter with his initials (my grandfather didn't smoke but liked to brag that he had one) he also had a personalized pocket knife. They would enjoy thier gifts but the kicker would be thier facial expressions when they say "Would you look at that, it has my name on it"! But if go with the clothing, personalize on the inside just because it's classic(y) !! Good Luck!! oh they also enjoyed their new paint job on the car!

i dont know if you have them in the US but in the UK we have adventure gifts you an buy!

There's several companies that do them but the biggest is called 'Red Letter Day'.

The idea is you buy a voucher upto however much you want and then the voucher can be excahnged for many many different activities like water rafting, racing, flying lessons, drink-tasting sessions and the list is endless...i always find its a brilliant present and one where the memory lasts forever!

I'm sure there will be something similar in the US.

A really really good dinner out at the best resturant you can get without a suit and tie if he does not like those. My parents always thought this was the best gift ever as we could take our time, enjoy the food, and talk. Parents just want you to talk to them.

What does he like? Does he have a particular hobby? Get him something related to the hobby. Take him to dinner at a great restaurant and maybe show tickets...
