There are many things that define the self. Firstly there must be a singular consciousness, the concept of 'I' ; it's just like a recognition that smething personal exists.
I'm not a student of psychology but then again your question is pretty general, so about identity... might be shaped by society, facts that the people and environment attribute to you--your name is one and often personal value... the love the society gives you.
Maybe identity is innate, I think it definitely stems from being able to think for oneself. One thing that reasserts the existence of self, in my opinion, could be the sensations we feel in our tangible bodies. Oh, and the theory of solipsism and maybe also existentialism--interesting things to look up since you are on this topic--is the individual's ability to doubt oneself. For, if solipsism, existentialism were true, you would bring the world and yourself crashing around you by doubting it. Try Rene Descartes.
