Not an easy one to answer, since pretty much every historian you ask, will suggest a different set of names or dates for the important 'eras'. Narrowing it down to which part of the world you are interested in would also be useful - e.g. the Italian renaissance wasn't particularly important in china at the time - they can effectively be considered two different 'ages'. Anyway: here's a list to get you started.

Prehistory
Ancient/classical world.
'Dark' Ages
Early Medieval
High Medieval
Late Medieval
Renaissance
Early Modern
Discovery of the New World
Industrial revolution
Victorian/Great powers.
20th Century.

Prehistory corresponds to an age where unwritten documents exist

Antiquity (the beginning depend on the country (Egypt and China 3000years BC)

Middle age .from the fall of the Roman empire (476 AD ) to the taken of Constantinople by Turks (1453 AD)

Modern time from 1453 AD to French revolution (1789)

And since contemporary time

You can divide it up any way that you want. If your focus is Europe, divide it up according to what happened in Europe (antiquity, mideval, etc). If your focus is another place, divide accordingly.

Here's mine:

1) before I was born - lots of stuf happened back then

2) childhood - bit fuzzy on the early part of this period

3) off to college - bit fuzzy on the aftermath of some of those parties

4) young adulthood - had a great job but was poor at first, fell in love

5) widowerhood - my dark ages
