The whole foundation of Zen is based on this exact question. According to the Tao of Movies the movie itself has existence irregardless of the audience (much like the tree in the forest). Although no one may be in the audience it doesn't matter if the movie is actually played or not as the intent was there to play it and therefore the movie can be considered at having being played on an exastentialist plane at the very minimum.
Good question.

Yes they show the film to an empty theater. The reason has far more to do with projection technology then anything else although there is a contract issue as well. Most movie theaters these days use 'platter' projection systems so the movie 'rewinds' itself as it is playing. They have to start the movie on time and once it is started it is easier to play it through than stop it and reset.
And for the "Zen" guy. If a movie plays in an empty theater is it still in surround sound?

Up until 1990 (and maybe still today) at Carmike Theatres chain they had to sell at least FOUR (4) tickets or they wouldn't show the movie. I've actually sat and waited only to be told the film wouldn't be shown because I was the only ticket buyer that showing. It sucked.

The movie should start on time, continue for some time: when the monitoring movie people know it's now too late for anyone to come in, movie could be stopped! Yes, that's what they would do in most places!

Oddly enough, this has never happened anywhere in the world in the history of cinema. There has ALWAYS been someone in the back, even if it's a lonely, pathetic loser trying to get out of the rain. And there's always the projectionist.
