We were having our parking lot resealed and my husband walked on it and tracked these horrible black stains all over our carpet! Does anyone know of anything that will get it out?

Instead of him immediately trying to remove the stains, he felt it was more important to get on the computer and surf the net until 2 in the morning, so now the stains are nice and set in.

A lot depends on the type of carpet you have. If it is solution dyed, there is a good chance they will come out.
If it is a lower grade carpet, probably not.
At any rate it is best to consult a reputable carpet cleaning contractor. I have seen them remove tar stains from carpets.

You can try the solvents listed by the other answers but sealcoat is impossible to remove from carpet. We have several sealcoat trucks including my own personal work truck which has a few spots of sealer from a careless worker getting in with sealer on his boots. So the bad news is, no removing. Good news: You're getting new carpet...YAY

At work we use mineral spirits paint thinner. You can try a little on a rag and rub the stain with the rag.

Open the windows first. Turpentine is the only thing that I know of. You get it at the hardware store. Good luck.
