I am very skeptical since "The convenient truth", (A. Gore) if it is true, they will be worth nothing in a few years. Be nice if they hit $100 barrel then I would definately sell!! Then if they hit $100, the fall out would be devestating. Double edge blade.

I'm a long-term investor and believe in holding stocks... for decades. If your gut, however, is telling you to take a profit... there's no harm in it. And if you think some other stocks show more potential, no reason to hold off reinvesting in those. As for me, I'm keeping my oil stocks... indefinitely.

To answer your quesiton specifically-

Obviously, as a commodity, oil will fluctuate in price. That is a given.
The other given is volatility in certain areas of the world.
Part of the price rise in oil is due to most oil reserves being found and explored are in more volatile climates. Accompanying these areas increases risk.

Since you mentioned having "oil stocks" and not knowing what they are, you might want to diversify in the oil sector and look at some top big caps, like an Exxon or Marathon and add a driller or explorer.
RIG, SLB, NBR, NOV, would help diversify yourself.
