Trust me on this one. NAFTA is the best thing that North America can have right now. Having a sort of NAU would only be disastrous because it would be so unequal, having the world's most powerful country and then Mexico contested would not look good plus the EU has run into so much trouble and has lost its inertia. That cannot be allowed to happen to the USA and also North America.
You also have to realize that the EU, with 25 countries is paralleled by the USA on its OWN. The US and NA do not need a union.

After living in Madrid the past 10 months, I've a few things to say about the EU. First of all, Spain is trying to do away with its military and indeed most of Europe isn't too keen on spending millions on killing people. So I don't think they're much of a military threat.
At the same time, all of Europe is facing huge immigraton problems from Central and South America and Africa. They are as divided about what immigration is doing to their cultures as we in the states are about our Mexican immigrants.
Financially yes the EU does help each other, and they work together on other issues like pollution and energy. Why not? They too have a right to prosper...and to decide what chemicals they do and don't want in their food and on their bodies. The quality of vegetables here is much higher than what we have in the states. We could learn some things about living well from the Europeans, but we won't because money is more important to us than anything else.
As far as a union with Canada and Mexico, now you're talking. If we could improve life for the average Mexican maybe they wouldn't be so anxious to leave home for the states...and in some ways we could hope to influence the Mexican government if we had closer relationships with them, and if we legalized marijuana we might end some of the gangster crap that the Mexicans have to live with because of our drug habits.

We already do have a sort of union called NAFTA (North American Free Trade Association), which eliminates tariffs and makes shipping easier among the US, Canada, and Mexico. It's just somewhat looser than the EU, but you have to realize that the EU has many of its own problems that we don't want in the US such as extremely porous borders and weak economies with high unemployment.

I'm Italian and I have to say that from my point of view it's America which declared an economic war to Europe: infact, you should consider all the protectionist laws in your country which penalize the free trade between US and EU.
Anyway, this is not the point; economical rivalry between US and Europe exists since 1776, so it's nothing new.
You fear of something that doesn't exists, a world's superpower called Europe: may be it could be true under an economic point of view and this is right, but under a MILITARY point of view...
It's ridiculous!
Europeans have just the military power to defend themselves and surely haven't any will to fight with anyone.
We have fought so much in the last 20 centuries: since the fall of the Roman Empire we have had invasions from everywhere, religion wars, crusades, civil wars, revolutions, independence wars, dynasty wars, plagues, oppression and "dulcis in fundo", two world wars, the holocaust, the superpowers' occupation of Europe and the Cold War.
I think it's enough, do you agree?
Thewre were only two wars on the american soil, the independence war in 1776 and the civil war in 1861-1865.
That's all.
Now you should study the european history of the last century before to say anything.
We have fought two world wars on our territories and, after every conflict, we had to rebuild completely our countries; european countries suffered for the cold war, the communism, the absence of freedom in the eastern part of the continent, a lot of economical crises caused by external factors (wars in Middle East, for example)...
Now you want to blame us because we don't want this to happens anymore: infact this is the true meaning of the european unification, to make war impossible in Europe and to grow up together, as friends, and not as enemies as it was for twenty centuries.
Now, if you think that this is a treat for US, well, we are very happy to be such a treat for you!
Really, we hope that every nation of Europe will be part of the EU one day, to realize the dream of a "wonderful and peaceful union from the Atlantic Ocean to the Ural Mountains" (Charles de Gaulle, president of France in 1960)
And if want to be a superpower for the next 1,000 years and you want to have the power to destroy the world many and many times with your nuclear weapons as you have now, well, God bless you.
If you want to make a much more bigger superpower with Canada and Mexico, God bless you the same.
We don't care about this things.
We stopped to care about this in 1945.
We want to be in peace with anyone and we want to ensure richness and rights to the future generations of europeans.
Otherwise, I think you should follow our example: find your place in the world, live in peace and respect those countries which don't want to live according to the "american way of life".
Be sure that you'll have only benefits from this and no more 9/11s...

We don't need no North American Union (NAU) or New World Order (NWO) for that matter. The best solution is to BREAK UP these United Socialist States of America (USSA)!!!!
Patrick Henry--- "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ."
Thomas Jefferson--- "When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny."
Benjamin Franklin--- "Those who trade essential liberty for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
Alex de Tocqueville--- "The Union was formed by the voluntary agreement of the States; and these, in uniting together, have not forfeited their Nationality, nor have they been reduced to the condition of one and the same people. If one of the States chose to withdraw its name from the contract, it would be difficult to disprove its right of doing so..."
Lord Acton--- "The North has used the doctrines of Democracy to destroy self-government. The South applied the principle of conditional federation to cure the evils and to correct the errors of a false interpretation of Democracy."
Confederate States President Jefferson Davis--- "The principle for which we contend is bound to reassert itself, though it may be at another time and in another form."

This is what you guys have tried to create, not only with Canada and Mexico (you already have NAFTA and hate Mexicans) but with the rest of the Americas.
To no avail.
Why?
Because what you want is to impose your will. For this reason even Clinton, who is well liked in Latin America, didn't succeed. Latin America, with the exception of the Colombian elite, feels closer to the European Union than to NAFTA.

correction linzer99...if you are up to date on current events you would know that the U.S. just re-instated the law and tariffs it had on all incoming shipments from Canada and Mexico in order to up the security.
