You need one that attaches directly to a stud. Try a ceiling fan box, these have telescoping rods that allow centering the box between studs so you can center the box in the ceiling.

Both 1 and 2 are correct. Certainly you should already have power at the source or be able to run power to the location for the hanging, unless you want to do the "swag" thing.

The issue is as stated, you should have a box, with extensions/braces attached, allowing securing to two opposing rafters ,,, Or, if it's not to be direct wired, at least a "Stud" / Rafter at the location of the hanging.

Since you don't state the detail of that, the issue now is to decide what type of lamp, and how it will be wired/powered.

Certainly there are hollow wall anchors and hooks, that were popular for hanging, but the weight of a lamp may be greater than is appropriate for drywall to support.

Ed Z has a good answer, also if you find a rafter that's in the right place your lucky. You can get in the attic and do most of the work, If it's a two story. it's a different story, with a single. Then you'd be lucky to use a rafter but? if it works.

I was lucky to get a job rehanging five ceiling fans, a novice that thought he knew what he was doing hung all five fans with lights in the simple ceiling board. Three fell the first day, one hit his wife but didn't hurt her to much. Take care.

What ever you do, don't just hang it from the drywall. Find a stud. If the stud is not in the place you want it in, run a couple 2x4's between beams to cross the location you want the lamp in. Attach the 2x4's to the existing studs. Probably best to do it in the attic, unless you are good at installing drywall.

If you're talking about something small like a Nook light or a hanging type living room lamp, you can go to lowes or home depot and get a "swag kit" it will give you options of hanging it with a toggle bolt or a hook that screws into the joist, also gives you extra chain and detailed directions.
