Career Confusion?

Question

I'm really stuck in a rut. I graduated from Exeter Uni in 2005 in French and Spanish with a pretty good degree (2:1 with distinction in Oral French) and I just don't know what job I want to do. Since I graduated I have done various temping jobs to fund me going travelling (April - July) and I am currently doing a maternity cover job in the Belgian Embassy working as a Trade Assistant and French Admin Assistant. I can speak fluent French and Spanish and have just started learning Italian. I'm pretty good with computers, have good all round multi-communication skills (ie. grammar, spelling, speaking with people, I.T) and am a confident person, but I just don't know what to do or where to start. I live in the South-East of England but am happy to move. If anyone has any job suggestions I might not have thought of or websites that could help me out I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!!

Have you had a look around the embassy to see what sort of job opportunities they have there? Is there a trade journal for linguists (one of your colleagues might know this) - trade journals always have job adverts. If you're really stuck, there's always teaching, here or abroad - not necessarily in a school, how about foreign schools, teaching English as a second language, that sort of thing.

You had scored well and you are already working for diplomatic / as trade assistant for the time being and is likely to continue . However, in case you are pressed to change you may try as correspondent for Spanish and French News Papers, provided it interest you.

Patent law. Right now the EU cannot decide on a common language in which patents can be filed and be valid for the entire EU community. Currently, patents must be filed in each country in the officical language of that country. Translating and/or proofreading documents can be very lucrative.

You could do many jobs.

You must now figure out your secondary interests and, goals. Do you want to work with children at an exclusive private school? Do you prefer the high tech world? International business deals? Teaching foreign language for the military execs and their families for the benefits and early retirement?

You have to do what makes you happy...sit down and evaluate some career advice, look at what careers best suit you. Alot of people are actually going in a total new direction other than their degree. I have a degree in Psychology and I worked in nonprofit for a while but now I'm working for HSBC.

Do you know what kind of industry appeals to you? Travel? politics? teaching? interpreting? translation? I was thinking of european commission for some reason when i read your post - they look for people with multi languages and would be a great way to work and travel too. Good luck!
