There are several meanings of the word 'year.' I am referring to the astronomical concept that a 'year' is the time it takes something to orbit the Sun. It is easy to get caught up in the Moon's orbit around the Earth and the complicated calculations necessary to societies that use both Lunar and Solar (or mixtures of them) calendars. The Lunar year is NOT dependent on what the Moon LOOKS LIKE (the new Moon) from Earth. It is only dependent on when the Moon has completed a 360 degree journey around the Sun.

The only real problem is that the Moon's velocity is not constant. It is sometimes nearer, sometimes farther in its orbit of the Earth. When it is nearer, its orbital velocity is higher. When it is farther, its orbital velocity is lower.

If we start a race between the Earth and the Moon, perhaps at a moment of eclipse, when the Earth and Moon are both on a direct line to the Sun, then watch them race around and around, we can see that in all laps the Earth crosses the line after 365.25 Earth days - Earth's year. But if we watch this race for 20 Earth years, we will see that sometimes the Moon will cross the finish line ahead of the Earth, and sometimes the Moon will cross the finish line after the Earth. So the Lunar 'year' is not a constant figure.

If we wait long enough - a few thousand years? -we will see that the Earth and the Moon once again cross the exact same starting line in an eclipse. So, statistically, the Lunar year will average out to 365.25 days.

;-D But any one Lunar year will have more or less days depending on whether the Moon or the Earth actually crosses the finish line first.

Well, a year is how long it takes an object to revolve around the object it is revolving around. In this case, the moon is revolving around the Earth. It takes the Moon 27.5 days to complete one orbit. So, a lunar year is 27.5 days.

I assume you mean Lunar year??
An astronomical year is the time it takes to go around the star (sun) and therefore is the same (roughly) as the Earth.

"Since there are about twelve lunations (synodic months) in a solar year, this period (354.37 days) is sometimes referred to as lunar year, corresponding to thirteen sidereal months (355.18 days). Lunisolar calendars that try to reconcile lunations with the solar year have to operate with intercalary months, resulting in a thirteen-month year every two or three years."
