Sounds to me like you are still letting the negative thinking win over the positive:

"I've read the books about these subjects but don't seem to have much success with the techniques."

Give it more time. It's no good doing one technique then moving on. You have to properly drill the technique into your head to change your thought patterns. If you have an "I can't do it" attitude and you think it won't work then it will not work.

Persistence is the key.

Think about it. If you are sat thinking negative thoughts about how bad your life is you will not be very motivated to sort it out because it's easy to sit and wallow.

If you fix yourself a goal of some kind and try to make every effort and thought go into that goal then surely you will have a good chance of reaching it.

It is so easy when you get a set-back to give up and say "see, I knew it wouldn't work". With positive thinking, it means you try to stay positive at all times, so any set-backs that come along, you just shrug them off and stay focused on that goal no matter what.

Eventually you'll reach it, and even if you don't, you'll still be a more positive and happier person for trying.

My entire life is full of manifestation resulting from visualization. The key is creating a visual form of what you want. Do not place conditions or parameters on the form, just the end result. I believe that thoughts are things (read Science of Mind by Ernest Holmes), and that you can manifest anything into your life (some you want and some you don't want). The greatest lesson here is to be careful that you do not visualize what you do not want or allow yourself to fear something....you will get just what you visualize. I have more examples of it in my life then I could possibly write about, here is just one: My sister and I own a business and a few years ago wanted growth and a larger facility. We did not have the capital and could not get a loan. We found the perfect building for our expansion and talked daily about how we would feel and what it would be like. We toured the building several times and even though we were in no position to lease it, we drew out all of the layout for equipment, office and etc. as if it were already ours. Soon a collegue from years back approached us about buying into our business as a partner as she had inherited money she wanted to invest. She wanted to expand the business. We agreed and reorganized our business into a three way partnership and were in the dream building within that same year. Our business tripled and we thought we had arrived! Soon, however, we found that we had not really thought through how much more staff we would need to handle the additional business and underestimated the cost of that staff. Then we began to regret the partnership because we had philosophical differences with our new partner and her husband. My sister and I missed the old days with our family owned business and visualized a change. We talked about the options and continued to imagine downsizing back to just me and her and our small fun company. Soon our partner's husband accused me of skimming money and all hell broke loose. Our partner withdrew and took a large percentage of our clientele, we had to pay her a large amount to settle the partnership contribution and we went into the red rapidly. We moved into a smaller building but our debts were still unmanageable. We are still paying off the debts but have downsized back to our small town business and are much happier. So, you see, it works but you have to really understand how it works and be ready to accept the form your desire comes to you as. The more you grasp how the Universe responds to us, the more positive your experiences of manifestation will be. The key is to monitor your thoughts and not muddy up what you put out there with doubt, fear or what ifs.

Positive thinking and visualization only go part of the way. Yes, we are the creators of our life, and to create a life we want we have to create it internally first, and then life has no choice but to reflect that back to us, because thats how it works, even science is showing this. So for example, if you want to be rick, yes think rich and visualize being rich, but also feel rich, and believe you are already rich. If you can achieve this internal shift, then life will do the rest and opportunities will come your way, it has too.

Positive thinking and Visualisation work for me as a way to get to my goals. I think positive (I am the eternal optimist) - things could have gone a lot worst. As for visualisation I break this into Week/Month/Trimester/Year/5 Year and work towards these goals - eg: By end of week I must find something complementary in regards to 10 of my co-works and compliment them/ By end of month want to fit into that gorgeous Black dress i saw in shop etc....

Well, it works for me; but I find you have to be a positive person in general, and genuinely put 100% of your belief in it. Don't expect ridiculous unrealistic things (eg 500 chocolate bars flying in through your window within 5 minutes) and think about what you want before you sleep every night.

They work but it does take some getting used too. If you can visualise yourself in the situation that you wish to be in and then take it step by step to achieve that goal it has worked. If you just sit and day dream about it then of course nothing happens ecept you get an active dream life.

In order for anything to conclude the way we wish it too we have to take the necessary steps to make it so.

In a way. The point of positive visualization is not "wishing". It is keeping your goals at the fore front of your consciousness, so that your every action is pushing you toward the goal.

YOU still must make it happen.

It works if you have a stubborn mind and want to change your bad habits etc, however, that is just the tip of the iceberg.

if you really want to change your life, then its going to take a lot more than wishful thinking.
