We cant, no one knows for sure. There will always be those who believe on the flimsiest of "proof" that non believers would dismiss out of hand....;

For me it is all about PROBABILITY.

In general we believe in something if it is *probable* that it exists.

I believe you exist rita_h, even though I've never met you, because I know there are billions of people around that I haven't met and, besides, you've put this question on Yahoo Answers!

As another example, I believe that the planet Jupiter exists, even though I've never been there to touch it. This is because there's mountains of evidence to suggest this it exists. I've even seen it with my own eye through a telescope.

Dinosaurs is another example. No one has ever seen a dinosaur, but there is mountains of evidence to suggest they existed at one time, so we generally believe in them.

All of the things you describe, ghosts, aliens, fate, god, the afterlife, etc, lack this crucial evidence.

If we take ghosts as an example. Ghost stories have been told for thousands of years and for thousands of years people have been trying to prove whether or not they exist. Despite this thousands of years of research there is still no conclusive evidence. So, at this point we have to make a judgement call about whether or not we believe, on the balance of probability that ghosts exist.

I would argue that most sensible people will say "probably not".

I know that there are some (yourself included if I understand your third comment correctly) who say that they have actually *seen* ghosts. Well, we know that the mind is capable of producing hallucinations. It is a medical condition that has been researched and is relatively well understood. We can induce and prevent hallucinations with drugs. Ghosts on the other hand, as I've said, we have no firm evidence for despite thousands of years of research. So, if you were to ask me whether I think you saw a ghost or had a hallucination, on the balance of probability, I'd go with the hallucination theory.

I think the famous Ockham's Razor applies here. It states: "All things being equal, the simplest solution tends to be the best one"

So, which do we believe?

That you had a hallucination - something that there is loads of evidence for, that can be induced on demand (by the use of drugs) and is well understood.

Or that you saw a ghost - something that you can offer no proof whatsoever of and thousands of years of research has produced no solid evidence of.

For me, it's the first option. But, it's a free country. As long as you're not hurting anyone else, you continue to believe what you like.

P.S. But if you choose to believe in ghosts, then you're a right nutter!!!! LOL

Well I DONT say that these things absolutely positively dont exist. What I do say is that I dont know whether they do or not. I am not an all knowing being and havent experienced EVERYTHING in the universe - which of course would be impossible. What i do say is that personally I DOUBT that certain things exist, but as an open minded individual I am willing to be wrong and interested to listen to everything.

Most of these things are based on the balance of people opinions.
I don't believe in these things, santa claus and I don't know about god and many other things.

On a more important topic if you haven't been diagnosed as Dyslexic please get yourself tested, your question shows the classic symptoms repeatedly. It can't be cured but it can be helped.

its like a water pill, or sugar pill give it to someone if it helps them feel better r do better dont tell them that it is a water r sugar pill let them continue to think that it is actually medicine and they will b o.k. if believing in ghost, or aliens help people and comfort them in life let it b like the lady who wrote n that her 3 yr.old passed and she has caught him on film and how comforting it makes her feel and has gotten her through the grieving process this is a positive.

Ghosts have to exist. think about this: If energy is never created or destroyed where does our energy go when we die? And since the energy can never go away, it can stay as a ghost if it wants to.

i can prove that ghosts exist. i am 26 years old, and since my 3 year old died 5 years ago, i have caught him on camera and video camera. it is an amazing experience and helped me with the grieving process to know that he is still with me.

The only thing that can be proved is that they DO exist.
