I am surprised that the people who place and pay for the commercial adverts do not seem to be aware of the annoyance. Personally I just 'mute' the volume so the advert will seldom seel to me!

Hi. Love the USA and have made many visits, first in the early 1980 and was amazed at how many TV channels - not all quality programmes -you had then. The UK then had only four channels and we were envious! Now the UK is very similar to the USA in many ways, with our Stores, Mc Donalds etc, Malls and of course, dozens of TV channels. Cheers!

Hey, Whisper. This happens in the US as well. But I think they do it so that you can hear the commercial when you leave the room to get a snack or go to pee. And TV advert companies are probably in cahoots with the Remote Control manufactures so when you break the remote control turning down the sound, their profits will continue.
It gets on my nerves too. The only thing I want to do when watching TV is watch it but I spend 85% of my time turning the volume up and down.

LOL Newromanticmum - Makes you wonder if good old Barry speaks like that normally.
Yep I think it is a ploy to get the ads noticed. Not that you can miss them. It is ridiculous now that you only get 5 minutes after a programme starts before the adverts kick in. Especially notice this on channel 5 and don't even get me started on the freeview channels!

THANK YOU!!!! I thought it was just me! My mother's always complaining that the volume is too loud and I say no, the advert is loud the programme we were watching wasnt that loud cant you tell? I hate it! I switch to a music video channel or just mute it. I think its a nasty habit! And when the freaking programme comes back they turn it so low you cant hear it. I feel sorry for u in the US you have more breaks then us.

It's because most people get up and leave the room during the breaks (to make a cuppa or whatever). So they increase the volume in the hope that you will hear the adverts from the other room.

I think it is due to the volume gremlin that hangs out in my television as soon as the adverts come along he gets volume fever then turns it down when the program returns, so annoying!
Not sure why it happens but it almost deafens me. Now I tend to hit the mute as soon as the adverts appear.
Could solve the problem completely and get rid of the television.

They do it because during breaks people leave the room to make tea or go to the toilet so they increase volume so people still hear the adverts, there is no point in them paying a hell of a lot of money to advertise their product if no body watches or even hears about it, i think they increase sound by 15 percent and i find it really annoying

The sound is denser in ads than on regular programmes, not higher or louder. Meaning there are more soundwaves going on, much closer together and more layers of them, particularly in the big music tracks they often use. Most programmes contain things like dialogue and ambient sound rather than 45 gospel choristers belting it out, so sudden density of sound makes us take note. Ah except for kiddies' programmes -- to try to retain their short attention spans, children's shows are usually filled to the brim with constant shouting, squealing, banging, chirping, chuckling, singing and mooing, so the ads are less noticeable when they make an appearance.

UK tv is getting worse. the second a show finishes idiot anouncers leap in to tell us what's next.
Adverts for programs coming soon pop up all over the place whilst you're watching
And yes the volume is CRANKED UP SO THE ADVERTISERS CAN GET AT YOU in the kitchen whilst you are putting the ketle on. Sky 1 and C4 are the worst.

With the amount of trash currently on TV, even including all the sky channels, sometimes the adverts are better.
They increase the volume to wake you up!

Yeah I'd like to complain but whats the point.
The broadcast commission have already made it illegal to increase the volume in ads for most countries.
So here's what the sneaky bastards do... They dont increase the volume they increase the frequency of certain pitches. Its like changing the bass or treble on your stereo, but they do it in a way which replicates turning up the volume.
