I had a 2000 explorer that was doing the same thing and a mechanic told me to check the butterfly plate on the fuel injection at the entrance to the engine. Just follow the air intake tube to the top of the engine and loosen the clamp and pull away the tube. there will be a large butterfly plate there and it will have a small hole in it for idle air. make sure that hole isn't plugged up with varnish or dirt. If it is that's why you escape won't idle no idle air and it's flooding out.

I would change your fuel filter first. If that doesn't help, have a tune up done, plugs, wires, air filter. If that doesn't do it, have your fuel system preassure tested.
