The answers above, though correct are a bit confusing. Let me just try to clear the facts:
In List A Limited-Overs cricket (Not international cricket)
34 (5x6 1x4)
IVA Richards (34) off DA Graveney
Somerset v Gloucestershire, Taunton, 1977
The S.C Ganguly achivement mentioned above was:
34 (4x6 2x4) off Sukvinder Singh, India v India B, Chennai, 2000/01. This however included 2 runs as no-balls.
In One Day Internationals: Sanath jayasuriya has scored 30 runs once:
30 runs: ST Jayasuriya (666642) CZ Harris SL v NZ Sharjah 2000-01
He has also scored 29 runs once:
29 runs: ST Jayasuriya (x4066661) Aamer Sohail SL v Pak Singapore 1995-96
In the second instance, as Peter_cat mentions, one run was a wide - so the total runs cored of the over was 30.

Most runs in a single over of a One Day International Match have been scored by Mr. S.T. Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka.
He scored 30 runs from an over from Amar Sohail of Pakistan in the match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan played at Singapore in 1995-96
He again repeated the same feat against C.Z. Harris of New Zealand in 2000-2001 in the match played at Sharjah.
30 Runs is the highest score made in a single over of a One Day International.
Although Sir Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri have scored six sixers from an over, it was in county match and Ranji Trophy Match respectively.

Max Walker :-
according to one of the stories he tells ....
I just looked up his book, and it was his father that hit 10 runs off one ball.
County cricket in Australia. The ball stopped just inside the square leg boundry, but right in the middle of a curled up Tiger Snake. Max and his dad ran the 10 runs needed to win the match while most fielders stood at a respectable distance away from the snake .... I don't blame them either

What Vakayil said, with one minor change. In the Aamer Sohail instance, one run was from a wide, the other 29 were scored by Jayasuriya.

Just "one day Cric" is different from (Int) ODI ! Give the credit to Jayasurya: also to all others for record in onedaycricket!
