how did the word "sideburns" ever come to existence?
and how come it means facial hair? do you have the answer?

It all began with a Union general in the American Civil War named Ambrose Burnside, who had some extravagant facial hair--He wasn't a too effective general, but his bushy side-whiskers, and others like his, came to be known as "Burnsides", which eventually came to be known as "sideburns".
Do an image search in Yahoo for Ambrose Burnside and you'll see what I mean.

I heard a story that they were first worn during the civil war by a General Burnside. Don't know if it's true.
