Mexico has made an impressive economic recovery since the economic crisis of the mid 1990s and has recently entered the trillion dollar class in terms of GDP ($1.10 trillion; 13th in the world). It is firmly stablished as an upper-middle income country. There is a growing middle class. Families are having one of two children, which allows for a better allocation of income; thereby, increasing their purchasing power; moreover, prompting parents to send their children to College/University. The poverty rate was reduced from 24% to 17% between 2000 & 2004. According the the Wall Street Journal, "This could be the generation that [pushes] Mexico into the first world." For those of you that think that Mexico is a shittie 3rd world country, do some research. I was born in Mexico, then moved to California in 1990 with my family. I'm happy with progress made thus far in Mexico, but it can always be better. I think the answer to my question is yes, but corruption must be cut significantly.

I'm the opposite, I moved to Mexico from Canada 12 years ago so we have similar but distinctly different perspectives. I think you have made some excellent points ( the average children per family now averages 2.1 instead of 7.5 in the 50s as you noted, so soon we won't have any more excess population to send up there, I guess the Wal-Marts will be closing down soon....)

The corruption is the basis of Mexico's worst problem, but much of it is now based on the enormous amount of money which is pouring into the criminal drug cartels from the American Illegal Drug Consumers!

In the past 10 years under Zedillo and Fox the increase in money allocated a) to fight corruption, b) to improve education, c) to build infrastructure and create new jobs, has increased by almost TEN TIMES. Unfortunately almost every single penny of it has gone down the rat hole of fighting the illegal drug trade brought about by the insatiable appetite of the American Illegal Drug Consumer. The American drug users send hundreds of millions of gringo dollars into Mexico every year in order to corrupt, terrorize and murder honest Mexican police, judges, prosecutors, officials, and civilians.

If you can get your lazy, corrupt and cowardly American officials and polititians to put an end to the illegal drug use in YOUR country, we will be a LOT closer to the First World!

(and to "b" - Civil war in Mexico? What a joke! You see, an idiot like you is EXACTLY who I'm talking about - an American Illegal Drug User!)

Only by joining in a North American Union with the US and Canada. The science fiction writers have been postulating that one for a long time, and frankly, I never have understood why it doesn't take place. Both Canada and Mexico have states and provinces which are divisions that would be maintained, and they would have representation in Congress the same as the other states.

The whole would clearly be greater than the sum of its parts, because all the money and energy now wasted on immigration would be a thing of the past. There would be only a very narrow border with other countries and immigration could, as far more appropriate, concentrate on being administrative authority at airports and seaports, and forget this whole wall-building madness.

All three countries have advantages and disadvantages, and the three of us united into one large union could be a worthy trading partner with a euro union. It would be a healthy and prosperous nation.

If Mexico achieves to get rid of corruption and improves security issues, I'm sure economy will rise in the short term.

Most of mexicans do not see a real possibility of a civil war, if government acts promptly the actual electoral and Oaxaca conflicts might dis-articulate. In my opinion the biggest issue Mexico has to resolve in order to become part of the first world countries is corruption.
