Place the chain across the palm of your left hand with the knot in the middle of your palm.
Place the index finger of your right hand over the knot, pressing down lightly and rubbing the knot in a counterclockwise direction. Keep it up until the knot loosens, then use a pin to draw the ends through.

Take it slowly and use a safety pin or toothpick-something you can get under the chain with. Don't try to go too fast. If it is a tight knot, it must be a thin chain-you may run the risk of breaking the chain if you are too forceful.

Use a pencil eraser to gently pull the knot out. The eraser will grab the chain and do the work for you. This has always worked for me even on very fine chains.

Put a drop of oil on the knot. Push gently from one side of the knot, do not pull just hold the other side.

I use a combo of the above methods.. a drop of oil and using two straight pins, or toothpicks, gently pull apart the knot..

I find that using an earring hook is ace for this kind of thing - works like a pin or cocktail stick as suggested, however you can hook earring through tiny loop of necklace and gently tease out.
